3 Reasons WHY We Evolved from Makawao Yoga to Mangala Yoga

Many of you in our beloved community are asking, “Why did you change the studio name?”

Changing our name was a significant decision and one that we did not take lightly! We believe that this change is 100% positive for our community and provides us all with room for growth and expansion.

Because you are a part of our extended family (ohana) we would love to take the opportunity to share our three main reasons for our most recent reinvention:

  1. To UNIFY our community

One of the most significant teachings of yoga is unification. Through our practice of yoga, we use our breath to become conscious of our connection to the body, the Divine, each other and all of life.

This concept of unification is key and core to the practice of yoga. And yet, with our old name we feel we were accomplishing the exact opposite of unification! Because Makawao Yoga did not accurately describe our Haiku location, we found our community searching for a way to refer to the two locations. This resulted in a disparate, disjointed feeling for all.

By unifying both locations under one name and a common theme, it is our hope that any underlying sense of separation between our two studios will also dissolve. We envision fluid movement between studios and a feeling of total and complete unity between our two locations.

The name Mangala means “auspicious” or “holy.” It is our intention to create the opportunity for weekly, daily and moment-to-moment experiences of auspicious or fresh new beginnings no matter what program or class you are participating in.

  1. We have plans to EXPAND

Wouldn’t it be amazing if your next off-island trip included yoga classes at one of our studios on the mainland or beyond? We think so!

In the near future, we plan to make our signature vinyasa flow style accessible in other parts of the world. Obviously, the name Makawao Yoga doesn’t have much resonance beyond our cozy little island so we are setting ourselves up now for this future expansion.

What does this mean for you? It means you may able to indulge your travel urge without skipping a beat on your yoga practice! Stay tuned for more details…

  1. There is value in embracing CHANGE

“The only thing that is constant is change.” ― Heraclitus

You may have noticed that we are constantly changing things at the studio. Moving the furniture around, expanding rooms and class offerings, welcoming new teachers…we are in a constant state of growth and evolution.

Because life is in constant flux, we like to make a conscious practice of embracing change fully. We encourage our members to do the same! Although every change requires an initial readjustment period, we have seen our community navigate gracefully through this growth period and other periods of change time and time again.

So here we are, unified under one name, poised for expansion and finding comfort and stability within our ever changing world. We are thrilled to include you in our vision and look forward to our mutual, continued development in 2015 and beyond!

We thank you for your support and we appreciate the positive outpouring we have received thus far.

And we would be remiss if we did not thank Ganesha for the smooth and easy transition we have experienced in the process. Mahalo Ganesha for making this new phase effortless and free of obstacles!

Namaste & Aloha,
The Mangala Yoga Team
